Create this easy DIY Inside Out Board Game to discuss emotions and feelings with your child in a non-confrontational way.
My kids and I love our movie night, but one of the one’s I was most excited for was the Friday Night that we could finally see Inside Out. I had heard the rave reviews, but knew it was going to be virtually impossible to wrangle my family of five and get us all to a theater. Never mind trying to keep my one-year-old entertained for the duration of the film.
Nah… I had to wait until the DVD release… which has finally come and available at Walmart!
The boys and I settled down for what I think was the best family movie we’ve seen yet. I LOVED Inside Out and the boys did too. It was a joy to watch (pun intended). But what surprised me the most was it made me really think about the person that I am. What memories shape me? What personality traits do I let rule my day? The kids and I talked. About what makes us joyful… and disgusted… and sad.
Given the tragedies we’re seeing in the news, it’s a poignant discussion to have. But, because my children are young, I made a little game.
Inspired by the Candy Land board, I created a color-trail with dot-markers and made cards to draw that match. The pieces were Inside Out licensed Tomy Toy characters that I got at Walmart. Will chose Anger and Graham, Fear.
Each child took a turn. For each color, you had to share a corresponding memory, concern or joy.
Red – Anger
Purple – Fear
Green – Disgust
Blue – Sadness
Yellow – Joy
Turns out Will is disgusted by broccoli and Graham is afraid of being alone. And, I was joyful to be with my boys and discussing their feelings, fears, and memories.

I love this for so many reasons! My six year old daughter is a huge fan of the movie AND family game nights too. Perfect combination. #client
