With warmer evenings, it’s the perfect time to get the kids excited about stargazing and constellations! Today’s Kitchen Stories features “The Night Sky” along with a fun DIY Constellation Craft.
My oldest son soaks up knowledge and is on a constant quest to learn about everything. The newest subject? Greek myths. I blame (or credit) a Percy Jackson series that he’s been reading. Regardless, his interest in Greek gods has transitioned into learning the stories behind the constellations.
His enthusiasm has caught on. If the kids are lucky enough to stay up past dark, I’m asked about the stars and which constellations they form. Kid… I wish I knew.
Which brings us to today’s Kitchen Stories book, ‘A Child’s Introduction to the Night Sky.” But let’s be honest, it’s an adult’s introduction too.
With the special star wheel from the book to help locate stars, our first activity was to identify the stars in our own backyard. Armed with flashlights powered with Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries, we scrolled to the corresponding month on the wheel and oriented the chart with a compass.
Alas, it’s not always perfect weather for stargazing, so for those days, ‘The Night Sky’ inspired the boys to create their own constellations. With flashlights, cupcake liners, card stock and a little creativity, this craft provided hours of fun for the kids.
DIY Constellation Craft
Wrap the bulb-end of the flashlight with a cupcake liner and secure with a rubber band.
Using a round guide the size of the flashlight lens, cut out circles on black card stock to draw the constellations on.
Using actual constellations as your guide (or make up your own!!), map out the dots on the black card stock.
Straighten out a paper clip and poke out each hole, then tape them to the cupcake liners. Because the cupcake liners are so thin, you don’t need to worry about poking through those.
Now your constellations are ready to shine. It’s a perfect evening activity for sleep overs!
