We all know the story now, right? Of how I broke my wrist? Falling off a bike the other week? Well, apparently my fear for the two-wheeled vehicle has not intimidated my son, my four year old son. Nope, not a bit. ‘Cause you know what he did yesterday? All by his bad self? Rode a bike.
Oh Happy Day: In Which He Rides a Bike
Got it on video too. This is his second time ever using his new-found skill.
No training wheels for this kid. Ever. Kinda cool, right?
If you wanna ask my husband the secret, he’d tell you:
Stage 1: Get a co-pilot on the back of the bike seat for babies (once they get great neck control)
Stage 2: Get them comfortable in the pull-trailer (still use those helmets!)
Stage 3: Get them to learn to pedal on a tricycle
Stage 4: Get them to learn to balance on a balance bike (little bike for kids without pedals)
Stage 5: Get a trailer bike (the half-bike that attaches to the back of an adult bike that allows the kids to pedal)
Stage 6: Get them a real bike
You should see our garage. And that’s just the bike gear for the four-year-old. Needless to say, this could probably have been done with much less equipment. But so could most of my husband’s hobbies.
Have any other tricks that helped your kids learn to ride a bike? Maybe a trick that’s a little less expensive?
