When life gives you lemons, go to a sprayground

Doesn’t it always seem like the days when you think you have everything figured out – the days when you manage to put on a decent “outfit”, have a lunch packed for your kid, and you leave the house on time – that something goes wrong. Yep, that was today. We were headed to the museum, and were meeting our friends there. Until the museum parking lot was full and friends were calling saying that the museum had turned into a zoo. With all of the animals let out of the cages. The animals being children. And the cages being strollers.

As tempting as it was to call it a day, we ended up re-routing to one of my favorite downtown parks – The Green at the Ratcliffe. Although it was a tad (100 degrees) hot outside, the park is well landscaped with shade and a small sprayground. There are also great casual dining options on The Green to go grab a sandwich, hot dog or burger and make a picnic out of it. But don’t expect high chairs. They don’t have too many toddlers dropping in on their lunch break from Wachovia.

The kids had a blast today. If you were walking downtown and saw a mess of kids running around a park in sagging Pampers, that was us. Nope, we didn’t have swim diapers or an extra set of clothes. But we had the essentials: picnic blankets, sunscreen and the determination to have a good time.

Check out The Green when you get the chance. It’s even worthy of being a planned destination. Although if it is a planned stop, I’d recommend a swim diaper. Unless you enjoy laughing at your child waddling around with his diaper drooping below his knees. Hey, we get our laughs where we can these days! 🙂
