We are gradually working our way off of the”worst customer list” at Pigtails and Crewcuts, a local hair salon for tots. They wouldn’t ever officially let me know we’re bad customers. But I’m sure our picture is hanging on their Wall of Shame. When Graham toddles in the salon, the stylists all draw straws. The stylist who pulls the short straw then ushers us to a fire truck or taxi cab, and straps the little guy in. Which is when the crying turns into a full-blown screaming fit. And the fun begins!
Getting your kids’ hair cut can be an exercise in patience for both you and your child. I would love to bring a straight jacket with me if I thought DSS wouldn’t come and haul me off to bad mother prison. But the hair stylists at Pigtails and Crewcuts border on saintly. They never make me feel bad when my child screams, thrashes and shows his teeth. All the while, they wield their sharp scissors like the trained professionals they are, never nicking my child and always turning his borderline-mullet into the shaggy-do his mother loves so much.
The process is getting better, thank God, because we have to go at least once a month. I think it’s mostly age, his growing appreciation for the Wonder Pets (which they play on repeat), and the fact that he’s become quite fond of lollipops. Which coincidentally, make the perfect adhesive to collect loose locks. But, he doesn’t seem to mind. So neither do I. Grape and hairball lollipop anyone?
