I wrapped up my last Intro to Blogging post with the suggestion that you keep posts short. And, as I reviewed what I wrote, realized it was a pretty long post. So, I don’t always practice what I preach. Who does? But just to add a little more fuel to your blogging fire, here are a few additional tips:
Leave the judging to your readers. Although I am always offering opinions, what I try not to do is judge others for having theirs. Just because I feel strongly about something doesn’t mean my readers do. And, I may even change my mind one day. Your readers may not always share the same courtesy; I’ve gotten some negative and down right mean comments at times on my blog and blog facebook pages. But, you develop thick skin and remember what you’ve set out to do – present your topic in an honest and fresh way.
Invite others to guest blog. I get really excited when someone submits a guest blog to post on Charlotte Mom Favorites. Not only does it give me a day off, but it provides fresh content for the site, a new perspective, and the guest blogger will often bring in their own followers to read what they’ve posted on the CMF site. Along the same lines, it’s also great to volunteer to guest blog on other sites in your “field.” Sites you guest blog on will often allow you to post a link back to your own blog, which will in turn generate additional new readers for your website.
Post timely topics. It’s easy to track your website traffic using statistics provided by your blogging program and Google Analytics. When looking at this information one day in late November, I was stunned that a somewhat random post about decorating Christmas trees had generated four times the traffic in one day than any other previous blog I had written. I investigated further and realized that I had used several key phrases that were popular Google search terms at the time. So I guess now I should be blogging about March Madness, my Easter Dinner Menu, and spring planting. Ahem…. Google? Can you hear me? 🙂
