The way it was, he wandered off to the first thing that caught his attention… a train puzzle. I went up to tell him good-bye, and I’d be back real soon. (Too soon if you ask me…. the ease-in period at our pre-school starts off with one-hour increments. Come on.) Anyway, Graham looked up to me and said, “OK.”
Selfishly, I was hoping for a little more sentimentality. But I was proud. My little boy is getting all grown up on me. After the hour had passed, I went back into the room. He was sitting in circle time with his new-found friends listening to a story. He spied me in the back, and I finally got what I was looking for. The eyes lit up; I got a famous Graham-smile. “Mommy! Yay!” he shouted as he ran up and wrapped himself around my leg.
Sure… dropping Graham off at the first day of school was a milestone, but the moment came when I got to pick him up.
Wishing you a great school year!
