Jon, a.k.a. Dad Most Awesome-est, is home with us this summer, as fortune would have it. Which means… Dad got to experience swim class at Charlotte Aquatics with Will this week. Now, he’s read all of the trials and tribulations I suffered through with Will during the first few classes. He listened to me as I struggled through my decision to continue the classes even though Will screamed the whole time he was in the water. He encouraged me when I shared how challenging the swim class was both me and Will. Fortunately, the last two weeks have been an improvement. Will’s been fairly happy and willing to participate in the class.
Proud Momma, Week 6 of Swim Lessons at Charlotte Aquatics
But, if we’re being honest, when it was Jon’s time to get in the water with Will, I kinda wanted something to go awry. I mean, how will he understand how tough the first few weeks were if he gets in and it’s all splashing and giggles and kicking? At least the kid could’ve pooped in his swim diaper or something to mix it up!!!
Nope, nada… Will was the perfect little swimmer. He didn’t even need that ball that I discovered helped during the last session. I told Jon several times, make sure you have a darn ball to keep Will happy. You know the first thing Jon said to me was after getting after the pool was? “That was awesome! And, he didn’t even need that ball.”
Are you kidding me? “Well,” I said, “You’re just the most amazing swim teacher in the world. It had nothing to do with the FIVE CLASSES PRIOR TO THIS that I helped him with. It’s just you and your amazing dad-ness. Congratulations.” Nope, not bitter.
After our success with dad at swim class during Will’s session, I decided to ban him forever from the pool. We can’t have him getting to cocky about this whole thing now, can we? This time it was my turn to shine. During Graham’s lesson, his original swim teacher that had been away for the last two weeks was back. The teacher was totally stunned by how improved he was, not only with his willingness to get in the water, but by the skills that he’s mastered in the last two weeks.
Everyone was claiming that it’s like he’s a different kid. I can promise he’s the same kid, although with a new set of swim skills, many thanks to Charlotte Aquatics. I beamed every time he willing put his head in to blow bubbles and dove into the water from a sitting position. There may have actually been loud clapping for that one.
I would like to accept our award for “Most Improved” now. Do we get a trophy or something? 🙂
