Road Trip Snacks For Happy Travelers

“Are we there yet?”
Nope.
“How many minutes until we get there?”
120…
“How many minutes until it’s ten minutes until we get there?
In 110 minutes we will be there in ten minutes.
“How many seconds is that?

And repeat, over and over again.

Sound familiar?  If you’re planning on traveling with children this summer, you will feel my pain.  Heading to the beach?  To Grandma’s?  Just running some errands?

If so…. You’ll want to remember the Mother’s Motto:
“Always Have Snacks.”

I’ve done the leg work for you.  Whether you consider yourself the crafty sort or more of the grab & go kinda gal, Harris Teeter and I have you covered.  For ever type of mom and every sort of hungry kid, we’ve everything you’ll need for the perfect road trip snacks.

harris teeter produce

It all starts here, at your Harris Teeter.  You’ll find your essentials in the produce and snack departments!

crafty road trip snacks

For the Crafty Mom:

Whether it’s you or your kids that prefer a little something “extra,” these crafty snacks will definitely delight.  The butterfly snacks are simple to prepare with decorated clothes pins and a few favorite healthy snacks.  And, our on-the-go celery and peanut butter is easy to make once you zap the peanut butter for a few seconds in the microwave prior to pouring in your to-go container.

diy snacks

For DIY Mom:

You might not be über-crafty, but you have a few minutes to make your own road-trip ready snacks.  If this describes you, grab a few containers with dividers from the wraps and food container aisle at Harris Teeter and fill it up with your child’s favorite treats!

Or, how about some edamame?  My kids totally dig popping them.  Simply steam in the microwave and throw in a dash of salt!  Just remember to bring an empty container for the shells!

grab and go snacks

For the Grab ‘n Go Mom:

Sometimes, you just gotta get out the door.  Especially if you’ve just spent the last three hours putting everything you own into the SUV for a two-night trip.  Darn, kids need a lot of stuff!  Fortunately, one quick trip to the Harris Teeter and you’re set.  Our favoirtes include the Ready Snax, applesauce pouches, cheese sticks, and lentil chips.  Yes, leave out the word “lentil” and your kids will never know the difference!  Momma’s promise.

With these snacks and games in your road rip arsenal, you might even get a “YAY!” when you tell them, it’ll be 6,660 seconds until you’ll be there in ten minutes.

I try to keep our snacks healthy as well as intriguing for the kiddos… I use some cookie cutters sometimes, or just put things in a pretty pattern. I pack each kiddo his own box of goddies and also have some other things on hand I can dole out as needed.

I’m definitely a Grab n’ Go Mom and my kids are 20 yr. old, and a set of 13 yr. old twins. I have been GnG from Day one and still am. We have a wonderful insulated tote a friend gave us 10 years ago that gets filled everytime we head out the door, no matter where we’re headed; even if it’s just to run errands. We also have two great plastic bowls divided into sections with a freezer ring on top. We enjoy grapes, carrot sticks, pretzels, cheese sticks, cut up cantaloupe and watermelon, and the occasional fruit rollup.

I live 500 miles away from family. Their in New York and we’re in Virginia a couple times a year we make the trip up north with our 3 boys. Very early on in our trip the “how much longer,” “are we there yet,” and “we’re hungry” start. We always end up stopped at a rest stop eating horrible greasy fast food and delaying the drive. And of course we spend much more money there as well. These are good ideas for healthier choices to keep them distracted and save our budget. Thanks’
