I’ve never been one to boast much about my skills as a baker. Sure, I fancy myself a pretty good cook. But baking? I usually pick up a pre-made cake from Harris Teeter when the occasion calls for something with icing. Sometimes, however, I get ambitious. Like last night. When I decided I was going to show y’all how to make the most delicious and beautiful 4th of July fireworks-inspired cake.
I hear y’all snickering. Stop it now.
So, I sat out a pound of butter in the morning to soften. I zested citrus and sifted flour. And late last night, I assembled what was the most divinely delicious cake batter ever. It really was good. Yep, I’m a bowl-licker. I confess.
I poured my citrus pound cake batter into the bundt pan, baked it for the allotted time, and pulled it out to cool. Lovely, right?
And then, I tried to get it out of the pan. Ta da!
Oops. Guess I should’ve used butter and flour as recommended instead of a quick spritz of cooking spray. My bad.
Nothing a little icing can’t fix! Or maybe sprinkles?
Yeah, no. It’s absolutely hideous. But you can’t say I didn’t try. The silver lining? Will saw my “cake” and squealed, “cay-cay-cayee!!!” Apparently, he doesn’t care that it looks like a 4th of July bomb-cake instead of a Patriotic Firework Cake.
Kids are awesome. And so are pre-made desserts.
