Exploring Latta Plantation & Nature Preserve: Charlotte, NC

Exploring Latta Plantation in Charlotte, NC by Guest Blogger Sarah

I’m thrilled to be guest posting today for Katie, at MomFavorites.com! As a wedding and event planner and stylist, I usually blog about my events, entertaining and décor tips.  However, this post allows me to step out of my normal comfort blogging zone and talk about my personal life with y’all!

Do you feel like you’re running out of fun things to do with your family this summer?  You’ve done the pool, the beach, the lake, and the park a dozen times.  Well not to fret, I’m sharing some fun and cheap ways to get out of the summer boredom rut you’re in! Best part, it’s all in one location and many of the activities are free.

Our recent adventure was to Latta Plantation and Nature Reserve. We love to hike as a family and Latta Plantation didn’t disappoint!

We arrived just in time for lunch. We decided to picnic near the Carolina Rapture Center, which was close to the easy trail by the lake. However, there is a new picnic facility that we look forward to exploring during our next visit.
Latta Plantation, www.MomFavorites.comIt didn’t take us long to finish our picnic and hit the trails! It was our first hike together as a family of four with everyone walking.

We decided to take the Audubon Trail because it was easy and took you along the lake. However, Latta Plantation Nature Preserve has 16 miles of trails that offer hikers a variety of terrain while enjoying the scenic views of the lake, forests, and streams.
Latta Plantation, www.MomFavorites.comWe found a cool area with a lake view and the girls couldn’t resist splashing in the water, and Bailey too!It was the perfect hiking and water fun filled day for all!

We can’t wait to go back and explore some more! There are so many other activities that Latta Plantation Nature Preserve offers such as canoeing, kayaking, and horseback riding. Not to mention it is the habitat for 97 species of birds, 17 species of mammals, 14 species of reptiles, and 9 species of amphibians.

You can explore Latta Plantation Nature Center, which features live, native animals, a discover hall, and outdoor amphitheater.  Not to mention there there’s the Carolina Raptor Center, an education and rehabilitation facility dedicated to the conservation of birds and home to the Southeast’s largest eagle aviary.

If you’re a history buff you definitely should check out Historic Latta Planation, a restored 19th century federal-styled home and farm.

Hope this gets you out of your weekend rut!
