Cleaning Up Dirty Mouths: Tips for Oral Health

Cleaning up dirty mouths with the Listerine 21 Day Challenge to better oral health.

Today was the dreaded day.  Today, we went to the dentist.  It’s funny… after giving birth, I feel like it’s gotta be big to get me worked up.  What’s a teeth-cleaning compared to pushing out a baby?  Ain’t no thing.

Except it is.  I really, really hate it.  Especially that noise.  With that metal thingy scraping on your teeth? Like nails on a chalkboard.  Ugh.   I’ve got goose bumps right now just thinking about it.

The kids and I hadn’t been to the dentist in a little over a year.  I know.  Bad mommy.  I hear ya.  In my defense, there was the whole pregnancy and surgery thing that threw me for a loop. But really, those are just excuses.  So, today, the kids and I all sucked it up.  Graham, Will and I took our turns and paid tribute to the dental gods.

This guy didn’t have to have an appointment. He’s got a dirty mouth of a different sort.

All in all, I think we were pretty lucky.  No cavities for the kids.  Although, I’m not sure that my three-year-old really let them get a good enough look to find out.  Hey – I’m thinking positive.  Me?  I’ve got two.  I get to go back for fillings. Whoopee.

I went ahead and scheduled our next six month check-up.  No more lapses for us.  I get that going to the dentist is super important.  And, that if you go frequently, the cleanings aren’t as bad.  I’m also going to be working on keeping my kids cavity-free.  I mean… I feel like we got lucky this go-round.   Now, we gotta work for it.

We were all told that we better add morning teeth-brushings to our daily routine.   Done.  And, because I know my kiddo’s aren’t super-awesome teeth-brushers, we’ll also be adding Listerine Anticavity Smart Rinse to their before-bed routine.  It’s Alcohol-free and comes in Bubble Blast Flavor.  Extra Bonus?  It’s got Disney Frozen characters on the bottle.  ‘Cause if it’s good enough for Elsa and Olaf, it’s good enough for them!

Since, I was the only one that walked away with a bad report card from our dental visit today, I’m also going to be adding a swish with Listerine after brushing my teeth as well.  Apparently, you miss 75% of you mouth when brushing, so hopefully adding the Listerine Rinse will help!

As you may know, it takes 21 days to make new habits, so why not take the Listerine 21-Day Challenge?  Listerine is asking you take control of your oral health and establish healthy habits and rinsing each day with Listerine Antiseptic.  You will commit to rinsing morning and night for 21 days and be able to choose an expert in fitness, nutrition or home organization and you will receive daily personalized emails with tips, video content and guidance establish good habits in your chosen area.

Enter and you’ll have a daily opportunity to instantly win exciting prizes, including a Fitbit®, a $100 Container Store® Gift Card or an Amazon Fire TV! For every seven consecutive days you swish, you’ll be entered into one of the sweepstakes drawings for a grand prize.

So, let’s get started.  Head to Walgreens to pick up your Listerine 21 Day Challenge products and get to swishing!

I was provided with product and compensated for my time to share this post with y’all.  All opinions are my own.

Thanks for the tips! I also have trouble taking my kids to the dentist. It seems like a smart idea to schedule a regular six month check up for your kids. I also have the same problem of procrastinating on check ups for my kids. It seems like a good idea to schedule appointments ahead of time so that I won’t lose track of when it’s time to take my kids in for a dental appointment.

Getting a dental cleaning is a necessary evil. I hate the scraping sounds on my teeth! The kids are a better sport than I am haha. I know we’ll be trying the 21 day listerine challenge!

Hey, Katie! Thanks for posting this article. I recently had a baby, and I want to make sure that he’s maintaining good oral health. Do you know at what age you should take them in for their first check-up? You have a cute kid!

    Hi Katie,

Thank you for sharing this article. This was really a good wake up call for me and for my kids, because lately I’ve been busy and forgot to monitor their dental health and forgot to for the dental check-up. Thanks also for the tips about Listerine, this article is really great and helpful.

It seems like a good idea to schedule an appointment early so I don’t forget to take my kids for a dental appointment. It was a really good wake-up call for me and my kids because I’ve been busy lately and forgot to check their dental health and forgot to check up.
