No sitter? No worries! We’ve got the formula for the perfect date night at home!
Need a special night with the hubs, but can’t get a sitter? Tell me about it. Long ago, I had vowed that my husband and I would get out every week for a date. Ha….
That didn’t happen. And it’s not gonna. But, just because we can’t get out every week, doesn’t mean we can’t have a special night at home. In fact, more often than not, we enjoy our nights in just as much as our nights out. It just takes a wee bit of planning, a little bit of luck, and a great bottle of vino.
Here’s my formula to the perfect date night at home:
1. Sleeping Kids – This is where “bit of luck” comes in. I always try to get the kids into bed early on our date nights; a little bribery always helps. I usually give each kid a flashlight that they can use to read by until they fall asleep.
2. Wine – What’s date night with a glass of wine? Lately, I’ve been digging Ribera y Rueda wines from the Ribera del Duero and Rueda regions of Spain.
My current fave is the Ribera del Duero red (made from tempranillo grapes). Simply uncork 10-15 minutes before serving, then cheers to a fabulous night.
3. An Easy Supper – Think elegant. Think simple. I love to grill a nice steak (perfect with the bold flavor of the Ribera del Duero) and serve with a simple arugala salad. Maybe start off with a cheese plate served with a glass of the Rueda Verdejos (which is bright and crisp) and end with some berries and cream. Voila.
4. Fire – A date night in requires a romantic setting. We love our patio fire-pit, but even an indoor picnic or dinner by candlelight would do the trick!
5. Marshmallows – Where there’s fire, there should also be marshmallows. Roast a few over an open flame and enjoy the toasted sweetness paired with that nice glass of Ribera del Duero red you’ve poured
