Follow these important tips for keeping children hydrated in the summer heat! Here are 5 simple rules to follow during outdoor family activities.
It’s hard to think about summer heat on a day like today. It’s a breezy 70 degrees outside my office windows right now, and I’m chomping at the bit to get outside for my daily run. I mean it couldn’t be more perfect. After my run, I think I’ll have to take a work-break and blow bubbles outside and supervise a little sand castle construction. Doesn’t that just sound dreamy?
I’m sure in just a few weeks we’ll all be moaning and groaning about the oppressive heat and humidity. But, I’ll still be going on my runs, and because my kids can’t be cooped up inside all day, we’ll still be blowing bubbles and playing in the sand box. But with that heat will come some new summer rules.
Safety first. Fun second. (A very close second.)
1. Give them lots of fluids! Small children aren’t great at regulating their own body temperature, so it’s super easy for them to become dehydrated. Be sure to give children lots of water and lightly flavored beverages such as Tum-E Yummies, which is sweetened with a blend of stevia and real sugar. When it’s hot outside, be sure to offer drinks at least 6-8 times per day. Lucky fur us parents, Tum-E Yummies fruit drinks are now available in six-packs!
Just like other Tum-E Yummies options, Tum-E Yummies 6-packs are loaded with 100% daily value of Vitamins C, B6 and B12. This new offering has the same great taste as original flavors, with zero sodium, 13g of sugar, and only 50 calories per bottle.
2. Offer hydrating snacks: Many fruit options (think melons) have lots of water in them, and are the perfect option for hot summer days. Another option children can’t resist? Fruit pops! Try this fun recipe from POPSUGAR!
3. No pea- sun outdoor play: The sun is hottest during afternoon to early evening so try to limit outdoor activities to before noon or after 5 or 6 pm. Or at least keep ’em in the shade!
4. Sunscreen – We love California Baby sunscreens in my house, as my oldest son was allergic to many popular brands. If you are concerned about your baby and sunscreen, check out these tips for picking out the best sunscreen from the Mayo Clinic.
5. Dress for the weather. Dress you child in lightweight clothes in light colors to them stay cool. Your child should only be dressed in one layer, so if they sweat the sweat can evaporate. And, if you have moisture-wicking clothes, now’s the time to use them!
6: Water play!!
