I’ve been bit by the bug. The decorating bug. Much to my husband’s dismay! Let’s be honest, what husband gets excited about a room makeover? Not many I know. But when I proposed my wish to update a few rooms in my home with budget and utility in mind, I was able to get him on my side.
It all started with a bar stool crisis. Crisis, I tell you.
When we purchased our home, I had gotten some cute swivel bar stools from a popular furniture company. Cute indeed. Until my kids started swiveling in them, causing them to bang against the counter and chip the granite. Not to mention the noise that made.
But can a girl stop at bar stools? Nope. Time to make over the room! First up Big Lots. I’d heard friends chat about the great furniture selection they had, and never one to pass up a one-stop shopping trip, that was the first place I hit up.
These are just a few of the selections they had! I was so impressed by the quality and variety of furniture at Big Lots! Not to mention the helpful staff that helped me get my purchases from the back and into my car.
I’ll reveal which ones I went with in a sec, but while I was at Big Lots, I picked up a few other great finds to finish up my makeover for the room. I had no idea they have so many on-trend items!
Well, I had a super-fun shopping trip, and was so-durn-happy to find everything I needed in one trip! Ready to see the makeover?
First off, the seating. I am in love with my new bar stools. These pub stools can be purchased as a set of 4 with a dining table, or as sets of two. How convenient! (Keep in mind that styles and assortment varies by store.)
I love the lattice-woven detail, the comfy (and stain-hiding patterned) cushions, and the high back. Way, way, way better for our kids, and more suitable for dining and hanging out in the kitchen. Which in our case, is more of a kitchen/dining room/living room/homework room.
Want to know a great way to avoid the costly upgrade of under-counter lighting? Mirrors! I attached these round mirrors that I found in Big Lots to my backsplash using command hooks. How easy-peasy is that? I also did some major tidying up.
I finally moved those sippy cups to a cabinet and rearranged some of the knickknacks for a cleaner look. Don’t forget to peruse the decor section while at Big Lots. It’s where I found that adorable birdie you see next to my stereo!
I hate having bottles on the counter, so I replaced my olive oil and soap containers with vessels from Big Lots.
How much cleaner does that look? (Tip: Keep in mind, that when selecting an olive oil dispenser to pick something that won’t let in too much light, which will cause your oil to go rancid faster.) Oh, and a pretty candle by the sink is always a good idea!
Want to see a few other updates?
I got this bamboo cutting board on my shopping trip. Isn’t it beautiful? I also pulled out my cookbook stand so fresh and healthy recipes will be front and center at the end of the day. (Perhaps, then, I’ll be more likely to cook instead of order take out?)
I love using my fridge as a location for my meal planner. I’ve seen a lot of variations of ways that people organize their grocery lists and meals, but I love this simple printable. I downloaded it from Etsy and can print one off whenever I need it, and take it to the store with me when I grocery shop. I clip them to my fridge with stainless steel fridge clips!
Finally, our kitchen is also where we sit down to do homework. I like having all of the supplies at the ready, but I want to be able to put them away when we have company or I need the space for cooking. I scored these cute cups and the weekly family planner at Big Lots.
What do you think? Have you had any Big Lots scores? What room would you love to makeover with Big Lots?
