November 10, 2011 Mom Time

“Pin It” Junkies, with guest blog by Macie C.

I was at a playdate the other day (yes, shocking, I know), and my friends started talking about Pinterest. “What are you talking about?” I asked. There was a gasp and collective turn of heads; I was then promptly informed about what the current rage with the stay-at-home mom-collective.

My interest (or shall we say pinterest) was piqued. I added my name to the “wait list” to get approved, then days later received my cool-kid acceptance email. 24 hours later, I’m hooked. Like, crazy-person hooked. I’m still working out the kinks and figuring out how I’m going to use it to “help” me stay organized instead of suck away my precious time, but I ‘spose that is learned with time… or maybe not, as Macie lets on.

Being the newbie I am, I asked Macie C., Pinterest.com veteran, to fill you in on her experience with the site. Here’s what she has to say.

See you on Pinterest!

If you’ve been around any sort of social network or are internet savy, you’ve probably heard of Pinterest.com. After having several friends tell me about it, I decided the check it out. And now I can never go back. My creative juices thank me, my priorities do not.

Pinterest is basically a find-it-all kind of site. Members take things from the internet and “pin” (post) them onto their boards. Other members can then see what has been pinned and pin them onto their own pages. Some of the pins lead to blogs or websites, others are simply pictures and stories.

This is a fantastic site for holiday decorating ideas, kid’s crafts, DIY projects and home organization. It is also a fantastic waste of time! You can sit for hours just looking at the pins other people have pinned, none of which you will ever actually use, yet you can’t stop looking!

There is even a thing called “pinamnesia” which I just recently experienced. Coming across a pin that told the story of a lady who helped Jewish children escape Nazi occupied Poland, I tearfully called my husband over to look at the pin and read the story. Two sentences into it, he looked at me with eyebrows raised said, “Do you realize you read this exact same pin to me yesterday?” What?! I swear I had never even seen that story before. Looking at too many pins makes you forget which ones you have actually seen before.

I love Pinterest. I use it to give me ideas for my almost 3-year-old when we are cooped up in the house. I have pins related to decorating the next place we live and gift ideas for my family. Does it suck my time? Yes. Regardless, I’ll continue to feed my addiction (and encourage anyone who wants to join me in it), and in the process find some pretty cool and creative ideas along the way.
