Peace of Mind for the Holidays

Let’s be honest. The holiday craziness is in full swing. You don’t have time to read a long blog post. So, I’m gonna keep it brief. Here are a few tips that have made my last few days a little simpler.

First and foremost… Silver Polishing Dip!!! For many of you, this may be old news. But for me, this was a major revelation. Line the bottom of your sink with tin foil. Add a few tablespoons of baking soda and a few tablespoons of salt. Fill with boiling water. Drop in your tarnished silver and voila… minutes later you will have polished silver with no buffing! I swear! That chemistry stuff is pretty darn cool. At least when it keeps me from having to use a little elbow grease.

Second… I had a recipe the other day that called for Dark Brown Sugar. No problem, I thought. Until I pulled it out of the box and it was hard as a brick. Seriously. How was I supposed to measure that? Sure, I’ve heard that you are supposed to store brown sugar with bread or a marshmallow or other silly things, but that ship had sailed. So, I looked it up. All it takes is a little time in the microwave. Throw the whole bag in there and nuke for 15 seconds at a time until it’s soft and crumbly.

Last but not least, I’ve been a little bit concerned about all of the small toys lying around our house. Our littlest one, Will, is just now getting mobile (no crawling yet, but he can roll faster than most of us can run). And, of course, he likes to put things in his mouth. I just wasn’t sure what the threshold was for what would be small enough for him to accidentally ingest. While pondering this, the Today Show read my mind. They were airing a piece on child safety, and get this – If it is small enough to fit through a toilet paper cardboard roll, it’s small enough to get stuck in their throat. Guess Santa is going to have to take away a few toys from our house when he drops off the new ones. Mean Santa.
