Now I understand the list of alternative names: Nana, Nonny, Mamaw, MeeMaw. Nana sounds positively youthful, Nonny a bit British. Mamaw and MeeMaw definitely live in a non-urban location. All of them, however, are still Grandma. And Grandma has silver hair, wears support hose, and makes biscuits from scratch; whereas I run a business, read fashion magazines, and love pairing the right food with the right wine.
So what’s my name? Grandma — plain and simple and wonderful. To three-year-old Graham, Grandma means a devoted playmate, a duet partner for his very original piano and voice compositions, and a steady supplier of steak and ice cream. To baby Will, it means long conversations in baby talk and someone who will rock him forever!
Yup, Grandma is great! The definition just needs editing. This Grandma wears a pencil skirt, goes dancing, AND knows her way around a wet diaper. And she’s fine with it. In fact, this grandma hopes to comment from time to time on mothering and grandmothering on Charlotte Mom Favorites. But, for now, gotta go! Headed out for some fun on a Friday night.
