Those of you that are friends with me on Facebook know that my family suffered a terrible loss last week. Before I tell you what happened, first you must understand that my husband is an avid cyclist. I cannot emphasize avid enough. Second, you must know that I consider myself to be a fairly organized person who thinks things through and doesn’t act rashly. Keeping these two things in mind, let me tell you what happened…
Once upon a time (last Wednesday to be precise), my husband asked me if I could meet him at the bike shop so I could pick up a bike of his and bring it back home on top of my car. The bike being repaired was his nicest (of many bicycles) that he owns; it was being fine-tuned for an upcoming race.
Sure, thing. I met him, we got the bike, we got yogurt, then I dropped him back off at work. “Don’t forget you have a bike on top of the car,” he warned. “Yeah, yeah.,” I said. He says good-bye to kids and closes the car door. Once again, he reiterates, “The bike. Don’t forget it’s on top of the car. Don’t drive into the garage.” Okay, all right. I got it.
In one fell swoop, I broke his bike in two places, damaged the front of the house, bent his bike rack out of shape, and scratched the top of my car. But, that wasn’t the worst of it.
In the end (if you can call one week later the end), my husband has taken it like a champ. I mean he kinda had to. Why? Because, the reason he knew to warn me about driving the bike into the garage was because he had done it awhile back. See? Now it’s not sounding quite as bad, right?
The other thing that has helped is hearing all of the stories from friends about the things that they’ve done. I’ve had a friend drive TWO bikes into the garage on top of a car, I’ve had friends back up over their (empty, thank God) strollers, and I’ve had friends that have asked for drive-up grocery service only to get home and realize they forgot to pick up their bags.
Yep, we’ve all done stupid stuff. And, where’s a better place to share it? I’d love to hear that I’m not the only one out there with “mommy brain!”
Nope! Not the only one! I let the dog in and left the door to my basement unlocked and WIDE OPEN for the entire night. I didn’t even remember it until I got a text from my husband the next morning telling me what I had done. A racoon could have come in or anyone really! No wonder the house was cold when I got up! Ooops. (And believe me that’s just one of MANY mommy brain moments for me!) ~ Christine @ Morethanmommies.net
@Christine – We’ve left the door to our house from the garage unlocked with the garage door open more times than I’d like to admit to. Thank God the world is a wee bit safer than we all sometimes believe! 🙂
I’m keeping my bike away from your garage!
That would probably be very wise! It’ll either get driven into the garage or taken from you by my bike-hording husband. 😉
