Ever wish you could remember which kid lived in which room? Yeah, ok, that’s probably not something you forget. So, functionality isn’t necessarily the point here. But, cuteness is a huge factor. So is letting your kid help you with a craft and encouraging them to recognize their name.
Inspired by a how-to I saw in Parents magazine, I figured this was a craft I could manage and even take it up a notch. See, I’m getting a little more confident with crafting. I even… get this… ventured into Michael’s. I know. Don’t fall out of your chair.
Wanna make these yourself? Here’s a simple tutorial:
Go to a craft store and pick out your wooden sign. Something light, and if you want to hang it from a door knob instead of an over-the-door hanger, something narrow. You’ll also need scrapbook paper, letter stickers, one tube of acrylic paint, mod podge (I chose matte finish), a foam brush, and ribbon.
Paint the plain wood (optional), the desired color.
Next you’ll want to find some templates for your design, unless you’re awesome at freehand drawing. I am not. I simply googled, “airplane template”, “cloud template”, and “ocean template.” Print those out on regular paper and cut out the shapes. Next trace the shapes onto your scrapbook paper and cut those out.
Once your paint is dry, use a glue stick and stick your cut out shapes onto the board. It’s OK if they don’t stick perfectly. Also, put on your child’s name with the stickers.
Next, coat the entire board with a layer of Mod Podge. It’ll kinda look like you put a layer of Elmer’s glue over the whole thing. Don’t worry, it dries clear.
Once dry, drill holes in the boards with a drill and whatever sized drill bit you want to use. If you aren’t handy with a drill, nail a hole in the board and pull the nail back out. Then you’ll be able to slip your ribbon in and hang the sign wherever you want!
Cute! Another great summer craft.
Thanks! I’m really proud of myself. Equally proud for managing to go into a craft store with two kids as I was to actually do the craft!
