This, my dear readers, is an anonymous Top Five List provided by a reader and obviously, a Pre-K teacher that feels as parents, there are a few things we should know. Here is their list. It’s blunt, but I’m a shoot it to me straight kinda gal!

1. When we send a note home, send the response back. There are 18 kids in the class, and I really don’t want to have to track you down for the form.
2. Teach your kids how to open their own food. String cheese is not rocket science, and can be opened by most 4 year olds. Try and send food in containers they can open themselves. We will work on it with them at the beginning of the year but by the end of the year we want them doing it themselves
3. We love to have you come to lunch. Occasionally. The kids love seeing you at school, so if you can, come by. It’s a real treat for them to show off their mommies and daddies, especially when you bring a special lunch). Bring an extra milkshake for the teacher (just kidding…kinda).
4. When you do come to lunch, please for the love of all that’s good and holy do not spoon feed your child. Your child does a perfectly lovely job feeding themselves, and we are trying to empower them to be more independent.
5. Please try and come to the special events in your child’s class. It stinks to be the kid with no parent at those events. There aren’t that many during the year. If you can’t make it, see if there’s another “special friend” that can come.
What do you think? Do you do these things? Are there other things you see going on at school that you wish you could put a stop to?
Do you have a Top Five List stirring around in your head? We’d love to hear it. Send me your ideas to: katie (dot) harding (at) gmail (dot) com.
