This New House: 4 Steps for the Perfect Move

** “This New House” Series on MomFavorites.com is sponsored by Unpakt.  Search our story on Twitter/Facebook with the #thisnewhouse hashtag!**

this new house

It was two month ago, almost to the day.  Our house was under contract, and we had just made an offer on what would be our new home.  I was sitting in my office, more than a little bewitched, bothered, and bewildered by the idea of moving.  How does one pack up a house that they are living in?  Do you hire packers? Do you hire movers? How do you tell them how much stuff you have to move? How long does it take? What do you start with? How many boxes do I need? Where do I get the boxes?  What stays, what goes, and what do I get rid of?

Yes, I had a lot of questions.  And now, dear readers, I have a lot of answers.  Two months later.

I wish I could go back to my former self and fill in all of the blanks for her.  And while that may not be possible, I hope that I can be assistance to you.  If you have to put your life in a box and move it down the street or thousands of miles, I’ve done the leg-work for you.

Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing some tips, advice, and things definitely not to do (yes, there will be several “learn for my mistake” moments, that I can share with you) to make things go smoothly for you during the stressful transition.

perfect move

We’ll actually be breaking down the entire process into four steps.  On paper, it seems easy.  In reality, it’s quite a chore.  But, if you set out with the right tips and tools, it will be easier.  Easier than it was when I went at it all willy-nilly like.  The four steps are:

1) Organizing for the move: Figuring out how much stuff you have to move, finding a mover, and collecting the materials that you need.

2) Packing: Ugh. This is the worst part.  Hands down.  But, we’ve got a few tricks to make it as easy as possible.

3) Moving Day(s):  A lot of things on this day are left up to fate dealt by the mortgage gods, but there ares some things you can do to help things run smoothly.

4) Unpacking: Light at the end of the tunnel.  My favorite part, hands down.  Consider this one heckuva organizing project!

After tackling these steps, our next portion of the “This New House series” will take us through each part of the new house.  We’ll be chatting about organization, decorating, child-safety and more.   Plus we’ll be doing tons of giveaways.  Think of it as #Organizedin2013 on steroids.  If steroids were legal.

So, now I gotta ask – Who’s moving? Has anyone moved and loved it? What’s was the worst part for you?

You can follow our journey with by using the #thisnewhouse hashtag on Twitter and Facebook!

*I did not receive compensation for any of the elements of the This New House Series.  I was provided with product and/or services to review and will only be sharing those with the audience that I fully support.  All opinions are always my own! **

My least favorite part is figuring out where stuff goes in the new house and getting re-organized. Oh and decorating! So many choices. Why can’t someone do it for me.

We moved a little over a year ago. Since we’re renting now I know we have another move in the near (1-3 yrs) future. The sort part is trying to pack with kids. Included the big kid who prefers to just shove things into whatever box or bag he can find.

My least favorite part of moving is not having enough hours in the day to get all the packing/unpacking done in one day. My favorite part of moving is purging closets and cabinets. Great way to declutter is to move!

By the time it comes to unpacking about the 10th box all the excitement has waned. Unpacking and getting rid of all the packing supplies is the worst.
