Hi Friends, I am Carmody of Paper & Fox , your source for Crafty Projects and Clever Ideas. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina with husband and two little boys.
I am a big “DIY” fan and I don’t believe you need a lot of money to decorate, style or add fun to your life. I believe that doing things with your hands makes you happy. The project below is one that will keep my little guys busy…at least for a few minutes. Here is one of my favorite secrets that I learned while teaching a preschool art class. Let me introduce you to the glory of Sugar Chalk.
“Sugar Chalk”- more than just a great nickname.
I love getting messy with paint and markers, but sometimes it is nice to create without creating a mess. Sugar Chalk looks just like regular sidewalk chalk, but is more vibrant in color and acts almost like a pastel. Sugar Chalk will not create chalk dust that stains your fingers or that lingers on your clothes. Guess what… you can make it at home and it cost next to nothing.
Sugar Chalk Recipe
Sidewalk Chalk + Sugar + Water = Fun Times
I picked up regular Sidewalk Chalk from the dollar section in Target. Once home, I filled a bowl with water. I added about 1/4 cup of sugar to the water then mixed until the sugar was dissolved.
I submerged the chalk into the sugar water for 30 minutes. Then, I removed the chalk and set chalk to dry on a stack of paper towels. I left the chalk dry for 24 hours.
The texture of the chalk changed, but more importantly, look how bright the colors have become. The red is my favorite.
Sugar Chalk is a fun tool to keep on hand. It looks beautiful on black construction paper or asphalt.
My guys have fancy toys and hi-tech gadgets, but they play with balls, sticks, bugs, rocks and chalk more than anything. My little guy especially likes to leave his chalk masterpieces on the side of my car, walls, furniture and his face.
So, what do you think? Are you going to give this easy DIY a try?
Thanks, Carmody
