Road Trip Travel Bags

Road Trip Travel Bags for Kids. Plus a tip to end “Are we there yet” for good!

Road Trip Travel Bags for Kids. Plus a tip to end "Are we there yet" for good!

Greetings from Emerald Isle!  This week, I’m mixing a little business and pleasure and life is good.  Now that we’re here.

Getting a family of five down to the beach, however, is a harrowing process indeed.  Six hours.  Three kids.  An over-loaded van.  Ugh.

This ain’t my first time to the rodeo, though.  And as such, I did a little pre-planning which seriously helped.  In fact, it went so well, that we only had to stop once for lunch!  No snack breaks.  No potty breaks (granted one of them is in diapers, so there’s that).  No gas station stops.  As far as road trips go, we nailed it.

The secret sauce to road trips with kids?  Hit the gas station the night before.  Make the kids hit the potty before they leave and at each stop.  Even if they don’t think they have to go.  And finally – Goodie Bags.

Snacks.  A little something to encourage napping.  And entertainment.  The Goodie Bag Trifecta.

First up – snacks.  My kids love Oreos and I love the new Oreo 2-packs that make snacking on-the-go a cinch.  You can grab the new 2 packs in packages of 18 at your local grocery store.  They also come in the Nutter Butter flavor, if that’s your thing.

Don’t forget a juice box or two.  And, I threw in an apple sauce packet for good measure.

Each kid also got a new coloring book with their own package of crayons (God forbid they have to share), and fun educational “toy.”

Finally, in hopes of a little napping, I found these adorable neck pillows to toss in their bags.  How cute are they?  And less than $6 at A.C. Moore!

We made it.  And with just a few are-we-there-yets.

Need a bonus tip?  I found this one a blog I read, and I’m sorry to say I don’t remember who it was.  (If it’s you, let me know and I’ll link back to you here!)  But, it’s genius.

As soon as the first kid says, “Are we there yet”, show them a bag of candy.  Tell them that they can have the whole bag once you arrive at your destination.  Only thing?  For every “How much longer” and “Are we there yet?” a piece of candy gets thrown out the window.  Yup.  I told you it was brilliant.  🙂
