Make your own baby food? Hah! I’ve always laughed heartily at “those” moms. Why on Earth?

They sell perfectly great organic baby foods in more flavors and combinations than I could name. Cauliflower, Cheese and Lima Beans anyone? Seriously. That’s for reals.  When it comes to baby food, I’m usually gonna buy it.

Don’t knock it till you try it?  Alright.  I’ll try just about anything: except bungee jumping, ziplining, upside down roller coasters and skydiving.  Just sayin’.  When I do get to trying things, I always invite my friends to join in on the ‘fun.’

So I invited my mom and momma-to-be friends over for a little Baby Food Making Messy Playdate.  Ok, baby food was made.  But, I was better at making the mess.

What I was interested to learn, however, is that in my group of friends I’m one of the few that purchases baby food.  Many of you moms want to make sure that your babies are getting the purest and freshest foods available.  Bravo to you awesome moms.  I will officially take myself out of the running for the Mom of the Year Award.

However… HOWEVER… I felt pretty darn good when I was able to show off how I use WaterWipes.  I love these things so much I keep them all over my house (like in the kitchen to clean up messes like when I decide to invite my nearest and dearest over to make applesauce).

Mostly though, I use them for diaper changes. WaterWipes, a premium European brand, is a chemical free baby wipe that contains only two ingredients, 99.9% purified Irish water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract, a natural antimicrobial agent.  Score!  So I buy baby food, but I use chemical free baby wipes!  Maybe I will enter that Mom of the Year contest.  Hahaha.

Yeah, yeah.  I’ll get off my high horse.  But before you get to feeling bad for my guests about my mom-brag, I did give everyone parting gifts of WaterWipes.  🙂  Which leads me to an idea… how ’bout a trade?  Next time, let’s go to your house to make baby food and I’ll bring the WaterWipes!

Oh, and if you’re inspired to get a little messy (and mom-awesome) in your kitchen, here’s the Applesauce Baby Food Recipe we used:

Applesauce Baby Food Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds organic apples, peeled, cored, and cut in chunks.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Put all of the ingredients in a large pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and cover. Cook until apples are quite soft, perhaps 30 minutes or so?
  2. Allow to cool (don't want to have a blender explosion!), then puree in a food processor or blender. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Okay, I’m officially inspired to throw a baby food playdate—mess and all! That applesauce recipe sounds amazing (and honestly, I’d eat it too). Do you have a favorite ‘grown-up approved’ baby food recipe you’ve made that surprised you?
