Toddlers and pre-schoolers love projects that combine movement and painting! This project makes creative use of your empty salt containers that would otherwise be tossed in the recycle bin, and it provides children with a physical challenge in that they have to figure out how to decorate the salt container while it is spinning.
The finished product becomes a unique and colorful wall hanging. Or is it a toy? Or a necklace with a giant bead?? Hmmmmm…
You Need:
- Empty salt container
- Wooden skewer
- Beads (we used wooden beads that can be painted)
- Twine or yarn
- Soft paintbrush
- Tempera paint
- Oil pastels or crayons
- Glitter
- Hot glue
How To:
Poke two small holes in each end of the salt container and put the skewer through the holes. The holes should be big enough that the salt container spins easily.
Add beads on each side of the skewer, and hot glue two beads on each end to prevent the beads and salt container from sliding off the sides.
Tie a piece of twine or yarn on each end of the skewer.
Firmly hang the spinner at a comfortable height for your little one with a nail or thumb tack so it will not easily come loose when you start spinning and painting. We used thumb tacks and they worked great!
Let them start decorating it with oil pastels or crayons first. For older kids, encourage them to try holding an oil pastel in one hand and trying to spin it with the other. For the younger kids, you can spin it while they are coloring. Teamwork, teamwork!
Next, try the same technique with tempera paint.
Sprinkle glitter and voila!
Happy crafting,
Jennifer
