It’s no secret that I’m on a path to a fitter self in 2016.   I started out with a goal of running 1000 miles in 2016, but decided I wanted to up the ante a little bit.  So I made it 1200 miles.  100 miles a month.  Figured it would help me get my mojo back that I haven’t had since baby #3.

So, I’ve been a running fool.  But it hasn’t gone as smoothly as I thought it would.  What my personal trainer has been nagging me about is finally starting to sink in.  Working out is only about 20% of the equation.  What you eat… that’s the big part.

Ugh.

I love cheese. Pasta.  And chocolate.  I abhor counting calories.  I’ll run five miles every day of the week, but not treat myself at the end of the night?  Torture.

So, I’m finally breaking down and doing what my trainer has been asking me to do for over a year now.  I’m tracking what I eat.  Everything.

After a week, I can see why this is a highly recommended process.  It makes you think before you put something in your mouth.  Am I really hungry?  Am I eating this just because it’s here?  Do I really want to mark this down?

It also made me realize that although I’m really good at meal time, I suck when it comes to making smart snack choices.   The leftover candy from Halloween in the kids treat jar isn’t delicious, so why am I eating it?  And the bag of crumbled cookies at the bottom of my purse?  I should probably just be throwing them out.

Instead, I’m replacing those bad snacking decisions with options that I get excited about and that satisfy the craving that I’m having.  Have you see the new DOVE® Chocolate Fruit & Nut combinations?   Marrying the wellness benefits of dark chocolate with fruits and nuts not only soothe my craving for something sweet but help keep me in line with my fitness and food goals.

My favorites that I’ve tried so far?  DOVE® Dark Chocolate Raspberry & Honey Roasted Almond, DOVE® Dark Chocolate Blueberry & Vanilla Cashew and DOVE® Dark Chocolate Cranberries all available at Walmart.  Uh-mazing.

I divide each bag into snack bag portions so I know exactly what I’m eating and don’t get tempted to eat more than a serving.  Then, I diligently mark it down on my weekly food printable.  I’m not exactly sure how long I’ll keep tracking my weekly food diary, but it has been truly eye-opening and has made me realize where I need to make small changes for a big impact!
