What’s My #1 Job?

This post was sponsored by SelectBlinds.com as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central. As always, all opinions are my own.

What’s my #1 Job? What’s every parent’s #1 job? Keep the kids safe. Read on to find out how one small change can save lives. #GoCordless

You know those moments when you realize how quickly things can turn for the worse?  How in the blink of an eye your world can come crumbling down?  They don’t happen often, but when you get a glimpse… it’s terrifying.  Like the time my son Graham, then just two, fell into a shallow pond.  All he had to do was stand back up.  But he didn’t.  He flailed.  Had we not been right there, he would have drowned.  In inches of water.  Sure… it turned out fine.  But you better believe I promptly enrolled Graham in swim lessons.

Ask my kids and they’ll tell you – Mommy’s #1 Job is to Keep the Kids Safe.  It’s true.  At the end of the day, I can pat myself on the back if my kids are safe.  But unfortunately, Mommy isn’t always there.  Like in the middle of the night.  Or the rare occasion she goes to the bathroom alone.  And as we all know… it only takes a few seconds.

When it comes to child safety in the home, we are all aware of the necessity of smoke alarms and baby gates.  We have outlet covers and bumpers on the coffee tables.  But did you know that your blinds… your BLINDS… are a serious danger to your children.  20 kids a year are strangled by blind cords.  Please, dear God, don’t let my child be one of those 20.

Before I because a mom and a blogger I used to work for a company that sold products to a home improvement store.  One of those was a cordless blind.  I told my customers how important it was for them to install them in homes with children.  How their nurseries and playrooms needed cordless blinds.  How it only takes 15 seconds for a kid to lose consciousness.  How it only takes one minute for a child to die.

In my first home, I heeded my advice and we put cordless blinds throughout.  But when we moved to our recent home,  I got lazy.  I forgot my #1 job.  Keep the kids safe.

As we update each room, we plan to install cordless blinds… to keep the kids safe, and I just wanted to pass along this gentle reminder to you!

Like me, SelectBlinds.com wants your children safe. Through the #GoCordless Movement, SelectBlinds.com aims to educate and empower families to have homes that are 100 percent kid and pet safe by using cordless window coverings.   In March of this year, SelectBlinds.com became the first custom window covering provider to go 100 percent cordless.

We want you to join the  #GoCordless Movement too, to help prevent needless deaths and injuries of young children and pets from window covering cord strangulation.  Each month, SelectBlinds.com is partnering with Parents for Window Blind Safety for the Project Cordless giveaway to upgrade an entire home, apartment, military housing unit or daycare facility with cordless window coverings at no charge.

To nominate, submit a 30-second video to www.selectblinds.com/gocordless.html#ProjectCordless!
