My husband just celebrated a big birthday.  It was a weekend full of birthday shenanigans, surprise visits from family, and one big family supper.  Despite the success of the celebration, I feel like I let the hubs down… just a bit.

Every year my husband makes a simple birthday request: Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup.  As a food blogger, you’d think that would be no problem.  But, I confess.  His birthday meal is a struggle.  Every year.  So this year I opted to make Mac ‘n Cheese and Brussels Sprouts instead of his classic birthday meal.  It was delicious.  But it wasn’t tradition.

You see, when it comes to tomato soup and grilled cheese, I just can’t leave well enough alone.  What would my husband prefer?  A simple can of tomato soup and the toasted cheese his mommas used to make.  What does he usually get?  Some weird homemade tomato concoction that tastes something akin to a mix of marinara sauce and salsa.

And the sandwich?  Well, that’s usually a hot mess too.  Know how to tell when it’s Jonnie’s birthday?  Walk into the house – if it smells like burning, I’m probably cooking his grilled cheese supper.

So when I saw the New Land O Lakes® Soft Squeeze™ Spread at Kroger, I was pretty pleased.  THIS is my answer to the Birthday Grilled Cheese Supper.  In a convenient easy to squeeze bottle, not only is there less mess, but I can squeeze the perfect amount of spread directly onto the bread.  Meaning – I get a perfect golden grilled cheese crust, with the real butter flavor.

And when I served up this Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich with tomato soup straight out of the can, let’s just say, my husband was one happy camper.

The Perfect Grilled Cheese

Squeeze a generous amount of New Land O Lakes® Soft Squeeze™ Spread onto half of the bread slices and place them down on a hot griddle.  Top each piece of bread with three slices of cheese.  Top with the remaining bread.

The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Squeeze the spread on the top halves of the bread.  Flip each sandwich once the cheese begins to melt and the bottom slices of bread getting a nice golden color.  Reduce heat slightly, and continue cooking until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.
