So this week begins summer veggie garden planting in Charlotte, one of my absolute favorite times of the year. I had a playdate over at my house last week, and many of my friends seemed impressed by our small-ish garden. I tried to convince them that it was very little work to maintain. Sure, you gotta build the beds and fill them, but once there, you have endless years of easy, low-maintenance gardening in your future.
To get started, I read through the book Square Foot Gardening, and learned how to build the beds, what soil to put in the beds, as well as what to plant when and where. We started out with one 4×4 bed, and now have six. This is more than enough for a family of four or more. Yes, we have a family of four if you count the dog; yes, she does eat garden fare. She is especially fond of eating the strawberries directly from the beds.
We just built our first 4×4 this year. I’m soooo excited to see what yummy things we will grow. And, hopefully, the boys will enjoy standing next to the garden eating freshly picked green peas like I did as a kid.
