If you find yourself googling Dr. Spock instead of reaching for the book, grabbing an MP3 player to play soothing sounds for naptime or sharing photos digitally instead of paging through a hefty photo album, then the iPad is for you. The internet and a nearly endless supply of applications are available at your fingertips.
As an e-reader, the iPad has the same options as the Kindle or Nook for downloading and storing books – books for you and books for your children. Many downloadable children’s books have a read aloud function or the ability for a child to tap the screen in order to hear exactly what it is that a cow says.
With the iPad, all those photos piling up on your digital camera or computer can be synched via iTunes to show off those first steps, a cute outfit or the infamous spaghetti-everywhere dinner. Instead of handing friends and family a small screen to review or heading into the office to see the pictures, simply hand over the iPad and beautiful full-screen images can be viewed.
Another great feature is the Skype application. With the addition on a front facing camera, the iPad 2 is perfect for video calls. So long as Grandma and Grandpa have a computer, they can interact with you and your children no matter how far away they live. It can’t beat an in-person visit, but you also won’t have to worry about cleaning house for guests.
There are many more features available, such as Netflix, Baby Timers and Event Calendars. All of this is contained in a package that can easily be left on a coffee table or slipped into a diaper bag. They can be costly, but the iPad at our house has left our laptop gathering dust in the corner.
iPad costs range from $400 to $800. 16 GB models cost less but cannot store as much data as the 32 GB or 64 GB models. Another differentiator is WiFi and 3G. If you only plan on using the iPad around the house or in locations with a dedicated wireless signal, a WiFi only iPad is a great buy. If you plan on taking your iPad on the go, in areas where normally you only receive a cell phone signal, opt for the WiFi and 3G model.
That way, no matter where you are, you’ll be able to access and read Katie’s newest entry at Charlotte Mom Favorites.
