Are you planning to tailgate before college football this season? You’ll have fans of your own when you cook up these grilled sweet & spicy Dr Pepper® chicken wings. Touchdown indeed.
I’m ready for some football (food). How about you? Sure, for some people this season may be all about school busses and crayons, but for me? It’s nacho and wing time!
It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to properly tailgate before a football game (thanks a lot, kids), but this year I have tailgating at my alma mater on my fall bucket list. I’m bringing my grill, a cooler full of drinks and enough food to feed a small army. Yup, I’m gonna be grill-gating. And I’m bringing these Dr Pepper Chicken Wings with!
Y’all. These are durn good. Make the Dr Pepper sauce and dry rub a day in advance, then simply grill once you’re ready to enjoy them before the game! These Dr Pepper Chicken Wings pack a good bit of spice, so serve them with cooling Hidden Valley® Ranch and RITZ® crackers to temper the heat.
Sweet & Spicy Dr Pepper Wings
Mix the dry rub ingredients together. Place the chicken wings in a large bowl, drizzle with olive oil, then toss with the dry rub. Cover and marinate for at least 15 minutes, or overnight (in which case you’ll want to put them back in the refrigerator to marinate).
In a medium sauce pan, pour in the Dr Pepper. Allow to simmer and cook down until about 1 cup remains. Stir in the soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and lime juice. Bring back to a low simmer. Cook for another 5 minutes or so. In a small bowl, whisk together one tablespoon of corn starch with 4 tablespoons of water. Pour the mixture into the sauce. Cook, stirring constantly until thick then remove from heat.
Prepare your grill, following the instructions on the back of the Kingsford® Charcoal bag. Once hot, coat the grill grates with cooking spray then add the wings.
Cook until crispy on the outside and cooked through, rotating during the grilling process to ensure even cooking on all sides.
Remove the chicken to a large bowl and get ready to sauce these guys!
Pour the barbecue sauce over the hot wings until you reach the level of sauciness that you prefer. Toss to coat. My only advice at this point? Grab as many of these wings as possible before summoning the crew. There won’t be any left of these guys!
